Caye Caulker

On our third day on Caye Caulker, we did the same stuff as the day before. It was Saturday so there were more tourists who had arrived the day before and there was a volleyball tournament at the split near our place. We had fry jacks from breakfast. Fry jacks are deep fried dough that puff up and are hollow inside. They taste like sopapillas from New Mexico. If you coated them with powdered sugar, they would be like beignets in New Orleans. We checked out the split, where a hurricane in 1961 cut Caye Caulker into two separate islands. This used to be only place to swim free of sea grass, but there is a sea wall here now. We ran into the kids we met on the ferry two days ago. A cute local dog followed us around and was rewarded with some leftover chicken.
We tried to go snorkeling but the kids weren't feeling it. There was a large blue crab against the seawall that probably freaked them out. We then went to Ice 'n bean for Christine to get a coffee drink and we hung out in the hammocks under the palm trees while the kids made friends with the locals. We went back to the Iguana Reef Inn to look for seahorses. They were hiding in the mangroves. We swung on the swing in the water. We bought some virgin daiquiris since we were on hotel grounds. The kids got hungry so we went to get more dumplings that they raved about. The Chinese food is very cheap and the locals line up for it. A plate of noodles and fried chicken is $5 usd. At 4 o'clock it was time to return the kids rental bikes so we returned them and went back to see the stingrays. We sat in the water this time and the rays glided over our legs. So wonderful. The owner even grabbed the tail of one of the stingrays he calls cupcake. I do not know why the stingrays are not afraid or what the risk of being jabbed by their barb is but no one seems to question it. We had more virgin daiquiris and then went back to our place. We did stop for some local chocolates.  And our dog found us again and we fed it and it went to sleep. Dd and I tried to play backgammon while Christine and Ellie played war. We leave the island tomorrow.
