Playa Junquillal
It rained last night and that helped keep things cool. We still ran out ac but it did not cycle on as often. It is the rainy season for another month so it rained in the morning and scatter thunderstorms are predicted all week. That didn't stop us from seeing a sloth carrying her baby in the trees.
We paid our bill ($25) and filled up our water and said goodbye to the other overlanders and headed to the beach. We were hoping to see sea turtles lay eggs. We stopped at Price Smart and had lunch and filled up on gas and headed to the beach. There are lots of beautiful beaches in Costa Rica but we narrowed in on a quiet area of Junquillal which lies at the end of a paved road. I didn't want to drive through potholes in the rainy season on a dirt road. We booked an Airbnb for three nights. It was a short drive to the beach. The price smart is across the street from the airport in Liberia which had flights on Delta and southwest. The price smart had a few gringos too. Junquillal beach is a large black sand beach which is well kept but there are almost no businesses around. It is slow season but I can't imagine busy season appearing any different. There were quite a few locals on the beach. The turtle hatchery is where they dig up turtle eggs and protect them under crates to keep predators away.
We played in the water until sunset. The water was warm and clear. Such bliss. After sunset we headed back to our Airbnb to clean up and have dinner (leftovers from the various meals we've had out but never finished). At 7 o'clock we went back to the beach to look for turtles laying eggs. We were there for an hour but only found huge hermit crabs. Well we would be here two more nights. Hopefully we can see some turtle action.
