Long slow days driving Colombia still trying to avoid road blocks
It was a great nice sleeping in the RV again. We got up and dumped the cassette in their toilet and the gray water. They had water but did not recommend filling our tank. We headed out toward Barichara, as it appeared the road was clear. The roads are okay but speed is limited to around 45 mph as there are a lot of things to slow you down such as animals or motorcyclists or potholes and speed bumps. There were a couple police checkpoints but we were never stopped. We stopped for lunch at a small palapa covered grill restaurant. We had a pork and chicken plate. The portions were huge and with 2 drinks it came to $15. We continued on our way passing through wetlands and massive rivers. The road seemed to be a levee of sorts 15 ft above the homes on both sides. There were a few toll booths with strategically places vendors and we bought some coffee (25 cents) and a cornmeal based deep fried biscuit and cheese for $1. We ended up stopping at a hotel/gas station/convenience store parking lot just past a toll booth. There were a couple abandoned gas stations and two texacos on opposite sides of the highway both with motels. The store clerks told us there was a blockade an hour ahead and a truck driver confirmed it occurred this morning and he recommended staying here as there were no good hotels further ahead. We had a couple Milo shakes (malted chocolate milk) and an aloe water and the kids watched a little of Mission Impossible 2. More trucks pulled in and lightning and thunder were in the distance and overhead and it started to rain. We had some noodles and leftover meat from lunch and played uno and Dd roller blades outside before the rain really started up again. I am not sure what we will do tomorrow. But we have a clean convenience store and safe parking and bathrooms and I might be able to fill water tomorrow.
