Tierra del Fuego
There were racing cars on the malecon last night so we had to run the AC fan but we otherwise slept well. In the morning we filled up gas and water and went to a dump station that was free in town. We headed to the border only an hour away and there was no one there. No vehicles. It looked closed but I walked around the building and discovered the entrance on the opposite side and no lines. We quickly went through tickled with the fastest border crossing so far and drove to the Chilean side and got hung up at the customs paperwork. The agent had entered the wrong VIN twice and I had to point it out to her both times. Despite that the border was a 40 minutes delay and we continued on the road. We stopped at a couple towns to buy confiscated frozen meats and fresh fruits and vegetables the customs agents took. The town stores were tiny but our third and fourth try yielded good results. We were able to pick up baby wipes for only $2. In Argentina they were $9.
We took a ferry to cross the Strait of Magellan which took thirty minutes. It took us six weeks to drive to the Panama canal and it took us twice that long to get to the Strait of Magellan.
16 km to the campground was dirt road and that was about thirty minutes to drive. There was a refuge for cyclists. There was a lot of goose poop. Tony, a German cyclist pulled up and we let him have the refuge. The kids had been playing in it.
Tomorrow we see penguins.
