Itaipu Dam
We had a late wake up today and headed out to see Itaipu Dam. We picked up some rotisserie chicken by the roadside and ate it at the visitor center parking lot. They sold it with boiled yucca root and Paraguayan soup, which is actually cornbread.Itaipu was the largest dam until Three Gorges Dam in China was completed. And apparently it has produced the most electricity ever. It produces 90% of the electricity for Paraguay. We are actually camping at a free campground on recreational land maintained by Itaipu Binacional, the hydroelectric company. We went to take a free tour of the dam which includes a brief film and a bus tour to a mirador and then a bus ride around the dam even to the Brazilian side (that's why it's a binational company) but the bus didn't stop. The dam was very impressive but the kids were disappointed that the spillway wasn't being used.
Since we had a late start we were too late for the ferry to Argentina so we decided to stay another night at the nice free campground before heading to expensive Argentina.
Termite mounds all over this area and northern Argentina.
